"My Baby But Cares for Me" is a jazz standard written by Walter Donaldson with lyrics by Gus Kahn. Written for the moving picture version of the musical one-act Whoopee! (1930), the song became a signature tune for Eddie Cantor who sang it in the movie.[i] [ii] A stylized version of the vocal by Nina Simone,[2] recorded in 1957, was a meridian 10 hit in the United Kingdom afterwards it was used in a 1987 perfume commercial and resulted in a renaissance for Simone.[3]

Simone recorded the song in late 1957 for her debut album, Little Daughter Blue, released in February 1959. The track remained relatively obscure until 1987, when it was used in a Britain television commercial for Chanel No. 5 perfume. To follow up this exposure, the rail was released as a single by Charly Records,[seven] entering the U.k. Singles Nautical chart on October 31, 1987 (1987-ten-31) and condign, later on a peak at number five,[8] ane of Simone'south biggest hits some 18 years afterward her previous chart entry. This unmarried as well made the top ten in several European unmarried charts and peaked at number one in the Dutch Peak 40.[9] At this fourth dimension at that place was also a twelve inch single released, Special Extended Smoochtime Version, with a 5.23 running time.

The Simone version of the vocal was featured on the soundtrack for the 1992 moving-picture show Peter's Friends, the 1994 film Shallow Grave,[10] and the 1996 film Stealing Dazzler.

Music video [edit]

In 1987 a claymation music video was produced past Aardman Animations[eleven] and directed by Peter Lord. The video prominently features alive action footage showing details of a piano, brushes on a snare drum, and a double bass equally they play the song. The two focal characters are represented by a singing cat in a guild and the cat who is in love with her.
